When you’ve spent more than 40 years in interior design in Los Angeles, what do you do for an encore?
In the case of Palm Desert resident Marty Helpman, the answer is to start M & B Consignment Center in Bermuda Dunes, CA. Named after Helpman and his wife, Barbara, the 4800 square foot shop is already jam packed with furniture, art and accessories, all very tastefully arranged.
“A lot of people say it’s the best consignment store they’ve been in,” he said. “It doesn’t look like a junk store.”
The business grew out of a post-retirement case of restlessness, and a good sense that a design business might not fly in the still struggling valley housing market, but a consignment shop would hit the spot.
"The most unusual item brought in so far is a birthing chair," Helpman said.
Meanwhile, anyone in the market for a couch or a dining set may be able to find a beautiful bargain, he said.
The Helpmans are keeping the shop open seven days a week and are having a lot of fun.
“Everything is better than we anticipated,” Helpman said. “It’s been quite nice meeting a lot of new, interesting people, it’s going very well.”
